Cat Senses is a 3D action/adventure game set in post-apocalyptic Japan, where Natsuki is a young lone survivor trying to find her pet cat again after being separated by a gang of looters. The style of the game mimics a lot of anime, where the environment and objects are quite simple compared to the characters, which is why for my concept art I stuck to the use of simple shapes and monochrome colour palettes; white, blue, and black for the environment, and white and brown for the backpack. I chose to do my concept art digitally as it allowed me to easily reference existing photos and alter the hue or saturation of colours if I didn't like how they turned out.

Process

At first, I tried out a semi-realistic style for the main character, Natsuki, as there is a lot of in-game focus on the story and character relationships (similar to games like The Last Of Us and Life Is Strange). However, this style didn't really capture the magical realism of the game, where animals can talk and the enemies appear as monsters to the player because of Natsuki's naivety. The finished concept art of Natsuki is in a style that blends semi-realism and anime, which makes her stand out against the simple environment. Her colour palette mimics the bright colours found in a neon cityscape, highlighting her presence in the dark and lonely streets.
